Unic is Diamond Sponsor
Unic has been supporting the Frontend Conference Zurich for six years as Diamond Sponsor. Out of conviction! The Conference is covering a wide range of the latest subjects concerning Web development, which are to be presented in two panels over two days. Always at the interface between Technology and Design.
Under the motto «Where Design meets Technology», 450 participants from all over Switzerland and Europe will come together in the beautiful Alte Sihlpapierfabrik from Zurich`s industrial age to share their perspective with experts from all over the world.
«Access for all» at the Unic stall
At the Unic stall we will not only answer your questions about Unic. As a highlight, you can have your website checked for accessibility at the Unic stall by testers from the «Access for all» foundation. This allows you to see directly whether and how your website can be read by blind users.
24+ lectures in two days
In two parallel panels, over 24 international lecturers will speak on current subjects and trends across the areas of Web Design and Technology.
The internationally renowned speakers include such names as:
- Josh Clark @bigmediumjosh, UX Design Leader; founder of Big Medium, a New York-based design studio which specialises in future interfaces for artificial intelligence, connected service and responsive websites; author of a number of books, amongst others of «Designing for Touch» and «Tapworthy: Designing Great iPhone Apps»

Dan brings together surprising Art Direction with intuitive Interaction Design; author of the book called «Pricing Design» and a co-author of the podcast & workshop series called «Businesslogy».
The schedule of both panels is looking excellent this year as well, as it offers an array of inputs on modern Web Development from 8:30 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening.
Lightning Talk by Fredi Bach
Fredi Bach, Senior Frontend Engineer at Unic, will hold a Lightning Talk on «Frontend First Development» on Thursday evening, 30 August 2018, in the Papiersaal. A full day of workshops is taking place on the day preceding the Conference.
Four workshops on 29 August at Belvoirpark
Design for What's Next with Josh Clark
Let’s prototype an AI product! In this hands-on session, you’ll imagine and design a concept product powered by machine learning. Explore the new digital interactions emerging from machine learning, and how you can put those interactions to work today.
Your guide is designer Josh Clark, author of "Designing for Touch" and ambassador of the near future. As we build our prototype together, you’ll learn practical process, technique, and design patterns for designing for machine-generated content and interaction. But you’ll also absorb lasting lessons and perspective for how to design for emerging platforms generally. You will learn new UX techniques for expanding service and brand across fresh-from-the-future technologies like speech, bots, physical interfaces, and artificial intelligence. You’ll leave the day inspired to create — and ready for action.
Design Your Design Organization with Peter Merholz (unfortunately cancelled)
As the move to establish in-house design teams accelerates, it turns out there’s very little common wisdom on what makes for a successful design organization.
In this workshop, Peter Merholz will shine a light on the unsung activities of actually running a design team, the organizational and operational challenges and considerations, and what works and what doesn’t.
The workshop will be structured as a facilitated conversation, light on presentation, with activities to get things going.
We were able to conduct a written interview with Peter Merholz in the run-up to the Frontend Conference.
New Adventures in Responsive Web Design with Vitaly Friedman
With HTTP/2, Service Workers, Progressive Web Apps, Responsive Images, Flexbox, CSS Grid Layout, SVG, WAI-ARIA roles and Font Loading API now available in browsers, we all are still trying to figure out just the right strategy for designing and buildings responsive websites efficiently.
Accessible autocomplete widgets that work for all with Joshua Muheim
While most autocomplete widgets simply aren’t created with accessibility in mind, since the W3C introduced the WAI-ARIA standard in 2014, there exist concise requirements regarding accessible implementations of various interactive usage patterns. Sadly, the WAI-ARIA standard isn’t easy and compatibility varies a lot between browsers and screen readers.
In one sentence: it’s a widget that’s truly working for all (and extremely cheap performance-wise).
