Redesign and rebranding: modern app architecture for 20 minutes

20 Minuten was facing the biggest change since the company was founded in 1999. The combination of rebranding and redesign resulted in a new, modern image that was to be experienced consistently in the app. At the same time, key project objectives had to be met: Increasing user-friendliness, optimising monetisation and implementing high standards of accessibility and quality.

The multi-brand architecture already existed and had to be taken into account during the redesign and rebranding in order to operate several titles such as 20 Minuten, 20 minutes, Le Matin and L'essentiel (FR/DE) in parallel and to adapt all brands to the corresponding design at different times.

The rebranding and the associated information had to be treated confidentially. The final designs were only made available shortly before the launch.

Solution

Confidential implementation: Technical integration of the new design system

Together with 20 Minuten, we carried out the technical implementation of the rebranding and implemented a comprehensive redesign – under special conditions of confidentiality. Separate communication channels, isolated build and deployment processes, and clearly defined roles and access rights ensured that confidentiality was maintained at all times.

Design & implementation

The new look was not developed by Unic, but technically implemented and supported. The focus was on the seamless integration of the new design system into the app – from the front end to articles and navigation to new features such as the Discover Page, Notification Centre and watch list.

Optimised user experience and sustainable monetisation

For end users

The new 20 Minuten app offers a modern, user-centred experience: clear navigation and new features. It is convenient and inclusive for millions of daily users.

In addition to adjustments to colours, logos and animations, features have also been redesigned and a new typeface has been introduced throughout. A redesigned look and feel, supported by the newly introduced Discover Page, ensures an optimal user experience. Cross-device features such as the Notification Centre inform users about the activation status of their comments and much more. The Discover Page provides users with optimal support in discovering many more possibilities of the 20 Minuten app.

For the customer

20 Minuten is consolidating its position as Switzerland's private news medium with the widest reach. The monetisation strategy is focused and sustainable – thanks to stable viewability values of over 80 per cent and efficient ad tech integration. Exciting new ad formats such as interactive ads, midscroll ads and the Welcome Ad Deluxe are also available.

Our collaboration with Unic has been characterised by a high level of professionalism and partnership for many years. Unic always has the same goals in mind and impresses with a high level of quality awareness. Their flexibility in the face of deadline pressure is remarkable. They always find a solution, even for difficult situations. The result is an app that inspires our users and equips us technically for the future.

With the new teaser formats, the editorial team has the opportunity to emphasise specific topics and convey additional information at a glance.

Measurable success:

  • Over 3.2 million daily app visits

  • Viewability values stable over 80 per cent

  • > 99.9 per cent crash-free sessions

Taking the multi-brand architecture into account enables efficient further development of several titles on a joint basis - with clear competitive advantages for 20 Minuten.
