20 Minuten focuses on technical excellence: app relaunch successfully implemented
The collaboration between Unic and 20 Minuten on the relaunch of Switzerland's most widely used news app is paying off, as the app has been nominated for the Master of Best of Swiss Apps 2025. The comprehensive redesign demonstrates the highest standards in mobile development and performance optimization.
With the launch of the new 20 Minuten app in October 2025, digital agency Unic, in collaboration with 20 Minuten, has completed a major technical overhaul of the mobile platform of Switzerland's most widely read private news medium. The project is now on the shortlist for Best of Swiss Apps 2025 – recognition for technical excellence and innovative implementation under exceptional conditions.
Focus on rebranding, redesign and new editorial possibilities
In addition to adjustments to colours, logos and animations, features were also rethought and a new typeface was consistently introduced. A newly designed look and feel, supported by the Discover Page, ensures an optimal user experience. Cross-device features such as the Notification Centre and the watch list were also added.
The new teaser formats offer users added value, as the editorial team can highlight specific topics and display additional information at a glance in the app.
Technical excellence for millions of daily users
‘The technical requirements were demanding,’ explains Marco Ghinolfi, partner and project manager at Unic. ‘The majority of traffic is generated by the apps, with millions of app visits every day. This requires absolute stability and performance.’
Access and monetisation
The app deliberately avoids content behind a login or paywall and improves readability and contrast. At the same time, the integration of header bidding and lazy loading sustainably strengthens 20 Minuten's ‘app first’ monetisation strategy.
The recognition by Best of Swiss Apps confirms our commitment to delivering technical excellence, even though the schedule was very ambitious, concludes Ghinolfi. The new 20 Minuten app shows how successful digital transformation works in the media industry.
