Test Manager & Test Engineer

What Do Software Test Managers and Test Engineers Do at Unic?

As a test manager at Unic, you support project managers in their work and take care of product risk in our customer projects. You are involved in the project from an early stage to develop the project-specific test setup in the team. You take into account any customer-specific requirements. Your work is guided by the quality criteria prioritised by the customer and the required efficiency in IT projects. Planning, analysis and design of the test process run in parallel to the project planning by the project manager. Test levels need to be defined and test objects identified.

As a software test engineer and test automation engineer, you are a core part of the development team, acting as an embedded QA engineer. Together with the test manager, you determine the test automation framework and draft test cases. You work independently within an international team.

What Value Do the Software Test Manager and Test Engineer Add to the Project?

At our company, QA is not an end in itself but is aligned with efficient processes allowing us to provide high-end software to our customers. Usability, performance, and functional and technical accuracy are often important quality criteria for our customers. In this context, the software test manager and test engineer play a key role in achieving these goals along the entire application lifecycle.

Driven by digitalisation, the complexity of our products continues to increase. This makes it all the more important to be able to test parts of the software on a regular basis. The test automation engineer plays an essential role in the team and supports the project team in their agile approach. They help the test manager to stay on top of the different test levels and coordinate with the developer team on test automation. They act as consultants for their teams in all matters relating to testing and test automation.

Will You Be in Touch With Customers as a Test Manager?

In our increasingly agile environment, customer employees are closely involved in the planning and execution of the individual work packages. Defects and bugs are discussed and assessed on a regular basis with process owners, requirement engineers, project managers and software developers. Bugs and tasks are prioritised together. With your experience and knowledge, you can provide valuable input.

Relevant quality reports and/or QA dashboards also help build a solid relationship with customer stakeholders. The test manager may also support the customer’s test manager in their preparation and planning of user acceptance tests, where necessary.

Typical Career Paths

Internal quality assurance at Unic is based on the ISTQB testing process. This is why we upskill our test managers and test engineers in internal training sessions and in official trainings with iSQI certifications, starting with the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level. Beyond that, different ISTQB Advanced Level qualifications are available and the certification can be initiated by the employee themselves. This way, we ensure that young professionals can develop to become junior and eventually expert test managers with a few years of professional experience. This career path does not necessarily require any academic qualifications, but a good command of the English language is needed. A completed vocational education as an IT specialist would be an advantage. We also support cross-development to become a test automation engineer.

Quality Assurance is a Job for Experts
